About

Katy Wilson

I am a visual artist, theatre maker and designer.

I combine a playful imagination and magpie hunter-gatherer skills with a love for making.

I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2004 — where I was first intrigued by young children’s interest in my degree show installation. Ever since I have been seeking the next challenge and the next collaborator and new possibilities for working with people of all ages.

In my work I want to tell stories, lift spirits, create fantastical worlds, transport people and encourage them to think and act intuitively.

Recent Work

Icepole, a theatrical installation for very young children was the result of an eighteen month Artist Residency for Starcatchers at the Tramway in Glasgow involving research with children four years old and under.

During this residency at Tramway I also created Sprog Rock (a gig for kids), The Light Installation, Sparkalator (a trip to the sky), Will you be my Guinea Pig? and This Sucks (about a Hoover) as co-creator and performer with Matt Addicott.

I also took a month out to do a visual art residency at the Bundanon Trust near Sydney, Australia.

I am one of the founding members of Stadium Rock Arts Collective currently developing Baton and Marshmallow Test.

I am one third of Made by Me who plan to build a Pavilion for children in Glasgow over the next couple of years.

Reviews

Icepole

an atmosphere of pure, friendly magic that carries the audience through the rest of the day, on a small cloud of happiness
An enticement to young imaginations, with some simply gorgeous visual effects

The Herald, Mary Brennan

The Dark by Rob Evans

wonderful, haunting design from a five-strong team led by Katy Wilson

The Scotsman, Joyce Mcmillan

Little Vikings Are Never Lost by Jenna Watt

The design by Katy Wilson was absolutely vital to the success of this piece. The detail paid to the ‘Moomin-esque’ Scandinavian landscape of colour coordinated folk-kitsch paraphernalia, was extraordinary and delightful. The playfulness of the production was perfectly complimented by this charming designer playground

Artists that inspire me

Michel Gondry, Julien Vallee, Studio Orka, Maurice Sendak, Louise Bourgeios, Andrea Loefke, Hayao Miyake, Satoshi Kitamura.
